FAQ

How do I get started?
I’ve never done Pilates before!

Pilates is taught at all levels and exercises can be adapted to meet different levels of ability.

I would recommend a 1-2-1 consultation/ chat before you join your first class. Where we could discuss your health, fitness level, your individual goals and any concerns you may have. I would provide you with a short introduction to Pilates, before you decide whether a group or 1-2-1 class would suit you best.

Can Pilates help me to relax?

Performing Pilates exercises correctly requires focus. Not only to learn correct technique, but to coordinate your breathing with movement means you have to concentrate on your body with your mind. Being able to completely absorb yourself into the exercises helps you to leave the stresses of the day behind, enabling you to relax. We usually have a short relaxation session at the end of a class, which is a lovely way to finish.

I have an injury, am I able to start Pilates?

Before starting any exercise programme you should complete a Health Questionnaire. I would check to see whether an exercise needs modification and/or discuss any limitations you may have,  but more importantly if you need or have consent from your GP/Health Professional, or Physiotherapist before we start.

The Health Professional or Physiotherapist may suggest Pilates as an option for your recovery and provide you with advice of what exercises/movements to avoid. This information would be useful for you to share before starting any exercise class.

Do many men practice Pilates?

Pilates was designed by a man, Joseph Pilates!

The same benefits can be achieved by men as for women. Adding Pilates to any fitness regime will compliment your workouts, introducing stretching and improving flexibility, as well as building core strength.

I have a health issue, am I able to start Pilates?

Before starting any exercise programme you should complete a Health Questionnaire. I would check to see whether an exercise needs modification and/or discuss any limitations you may have,  but more importantly if you need or have consent from your GP/Health Professional before we start.

What if I can’t keep up with
everyone in the class?

Everyone goes at their own pace, exercises can be adapted for all levels. You can stop and stretch at any point in the class and I am there to help if your technique isn’t quite right or if you want to ask for help. I can help individuals even in a group setting. Try not to be concerned, everyone has to start at the beginning and I constantly remind the class of the fundamentals, even to breathe.

Everyone in the class will be concentrating on their own technique, there really is no competition in Pilates. My classes are about ‘you’ and having some ‘you’ time.

As you progress and build your strength, your confidence will grow. However, if you are concerned I would recommend starting with a 1-2-1 consultation/chat, where I would introduce you to Pilates.  We could have some individual sessions until you felt comfortable enough to move forward.
